Hello everyone, so as promised it's the surgeon here! It's a bit chaotic and a cross between being 'catheter and stone queen' (like at home) and being in a hot A+E minors department.
I can't claim to have done many operations on my own because the surgical techs here are amazing: they do all sorts, from thyroidectomies to nephrectomies. So they're essentially supervising me. I'm now pretty sorted on the old open prostate and have helped with a few open stones, a nephrectomy, several laparotomies and a hysterectomy (and probably lots of other things I've forgotten).
I'm finding it frustrating that I can't talk to the patients very well (or the other staff) and strange not being able to get a CT, etc: but overall it's been a great experience so far and hopefully I've been helpful to the 'equip bloc'!
Anyway, it's been a rather long and sweaty afternoon so going to go and find myself some food and drink now. sxxx
Tim and Sarah are travelling to Cameroon! During August to September, we'll be visiting and working in a hospital in the north of the country, near the town of Maroua. Follow us on this blog for news and pictures of what we're doing! Thanks.
