Maroua

Up here where we are in the 'extreme-nord', Maroua is the nearest town: I guess around 250,000 inhabitants. It's the capital of the 'fulfude' (Muslim) part of northern Cameroon.

It's a crazy sort of African city, full people, stalls (including photocopier and printing machines on tables by the side of the round, leads trailing back into the shop over the pavement behind, offering 'print-and-go' services), animals, dust, children begging, music, and traffic-like-you've-never-seen-before.

We tend to go briefly every weekend to stock up on some essentials: vegetables, bananas, pasta, green peppers, aubergines, avocados, and oranges.

Here's the central market: tiny, crowded alley-ways with hundreds and hundreds of small stalls:

And roads with a hundred bikes coming at full pelt every second of the day (you take your life in your hands crossing it):

Honestly, when we were in on Saturday, I saw a guy on his motorbike, traveling at probably 40 mph down the main road of the city, with two goats strapped astride, one in front of him and one behind, with legs hanging down. Poor things! Not many 'animal rights' here I'm afraid!
